Protens



Protens are crystal-like structures that store an almost infinite amount of energy; they are a perfect battery. Protens can absorb energy from almost any source and store it forever. Like almost everything associated with Creator Tech, Protens can't be manufactured or duplicated.

Protens are found in three locations:

Progenitor ships, beyond possessing a supply of fully functional Protens when they emerge from the Mass-O, grow Protens in a process not fully understood. Discovery Landers are powered by a cache of Protens harvested from "farms" inside certain areas on the ship. Landers, like Progenitors, can grow new Protens (very slowly); they look like crystal clusters/stalactites and stalagmites emerging from floors/ceilings/walls. The distribution of these Protens by those sentient beings controlling access to the Lander is often a source of debate and dispute, sometimes violent (but this risks the Lander shutting down for generations).

The Hub has a number of Protens "farms" which Servitors guard/tend, extracting Protens and transporting them where and when needed. Here, too, Protens are made available in small quantities to the denizens of the Hub.

Most galaxies have no Progenitor Ships, meaning the only access to Protens are the ones powering the Discovery Landers and the Servitors maintaining them.



Protens create an energy field that all Creator Tech is able to access as long as it has proximity to the source. Conventional tech does NOT have the ability to tap into Protens energy that way, creating a need for wires/cables.

Creator Tech on the Hub and in Discovery Landers will recharge Protens using available power sources (solar, hydro, geothermic). Protens will not recharge on their own. Many worlds have created systems to speed up the recharging process (feeding energy to the Protens via solar arrays, for example) to keep Creator Tech such as Assemblers humming around the clock.

Because Protens are incredibly valuable, races will fight over them and individuals will risk their lives attempting to destroy Discovery Ships and Servitors to extract their power sources.
