Servitors

3min

Servitors are the autonomous androids that protect and maintain the Discovery Landers once they are rooted on a planet. Created by Landers via a semi-organic process, Servitors come in many shapes and sizes, adapting to their roles depending on their planet's environment and biosphere. An example: if a Discovery Lander is based in an ocean (because the local sentient species lives there), and there are large aquatic predators that threaten those who would use the Lander, KNSXE5TJORXXE4ZAMNXXK3DEEB2GC23FEB XW4IDUNBSSA43JPJSSAYLOMQQHG2DBOBSSA33GEBQSA3LBONZWS5TFEBGGK5TJMF2GQYLOFY.

Like all Creator Tech, Servitors are agnostic about what sentient beings do, so long as nothing threatens the Lander or the Servitors themselves. They are not hostile but will protect themselves and their domain. When they physically engage a life form, they look to disarm or neutralize, and once the threat has passed, they immediately return to their primary functions. In most situations, Servitors are not interested in sentient beings, neither engaging them nor perform tasks for them.

Another factor shaping the roles that Servitors will play, specifically when a planet is home to one or more sentient races, is the evolutionary status and density of the population, both native and visiting. For example, a more primitive race with limited numbers would have smaller Servitors to manage the Discovery Lander and any threats to it, while a more advanced society that draws numerous jumpers would require larger Servitors.

Servitors continue to adapt as life on a planet evolves. They may have taken one form initially and then changed over the passing millennia. For example, had there been a Discovery Lander on Earth during the Mesozoic Era, the Servitors would have been large enough to protect the Lander from aggressive dinosaurs. After the mass extinction event and the subsequent rise of mammals, however, Servitors could and would be smaller.

In some cases, outdated Servitors would return to the Lander so that materials could be reused, while in others, the Servitors would simply shut down. One of the Servitors' key roles after a Discovery Lander arrives on a new planet is to conduct an extensive visual global survey of flora, fauna, ecosystems, climate, etc. The information gathered is sent back to the Hub, specifically the Astrograph, where it is stored and can be retrieved by those who might wish to jump to the planet.

As with the Discovery Landers themselves, Servitors evoke a sense of awe and wonder when encountered for the first time, even trigger a primal response of fear; a sentient being inevitably understands that a Servitor is not aggressive or malevolent, but realize that they should use caution around it.

Servitors also function on the Hub, operating as infrastructure architects, expanding the Creator Tech network when the system decides there is a need. They emerge from deep within the lower levels, spider-like, tendrils linking them to the Creator Tech far below, using these organic threads to weave whatever is required.

Other Notes on Servitors

• Servitors create a perimeter around their Discovery Lander and will react if encroached upon (removing the problem).

• Servitors don’t have much agency; they are programmed for specific roles. They maintain the system, perform an initial scout/surveillance of the world upon landing that informs the Lander’s first message back to the Hub, and they make the planet ready for the arrival of sentient beings via the transpods.

• Like all Creator Tech, Servitors are singularly focused on their mission to connect life in the Hub. If planetary changes somehow trap a Lander (in ice, for example), the Servitors do everything in their power to free the ship.
